How is Rakeback Calculated?

SNG’s

When you play a Sit and Go (SNG) it’s clear what your rakeback should be. If you play a $10 + $1 SNG you know that the fee (or rake) for playing is the $1, therefore it’s easy to calculate how much of that money you will receive back in rakeback according to your percentage rakeback deal.

Cash Games

For cash games every pot that sees a pot gets raked. It’s easy for each poker room to work out what rake they take from each pot (usually 5% up to $3). However, how a poker room calculates your personal rakeback is a little bit more complicated. There are two main methods that poker rooms use to calculate your personal rakeback in a cash game:

Contributed Rakeback

Contributed rakeback is the industry standard. For every dollar that you personally put in the pot, you take a percentage that back. For example if you contribute $10 to a pot, the rake to you would be $3.33 and on a 33% rakeback deal you would receive $1.11 back whether you win or lose the pot. This is the fairest way of doing things, you earn money on everything you put in the pot and you don’t earn money on anything else other people put in the pot.

The advantages for loose aggressive players is obvious. Every time you enter a pot you’ll receive some money back. For a tight player who sits and waits for premium hands and doesn’t play too many pots, the contributed rake method of calculating rakeback isn’t so attractive.

Dealt Rakeback

This is method of calculating rakeback is getting more and more rare, for good reason. With this method if you are dealt cards you are considered to have contributed to the pot and therefore eligible for rakeback. The rake per hand is is determined by dividing the amount of rake by the amount of the players in the pot. For example, if you are in a ten handed hold’em game and the rake taken from a hand is $4, you would be considered to have contributed $0.40 to pot.

Obviously this is a tight players dream! All you have to do is be dealt cards and you can gain rakeback from this. Open up 8 tables at once and you’re well on the way to a tidy little income, as long as you’re a break even player! Well, that’s the idea.

Poker rooms that offer contributed rakeback deals are Full Tilt Poker and any skin on the Cake Poker network.
